Thread and Maple Crochet Page for Furls Hooks Review

I’ll admit it – I’m a crochet hook hoarder. Most of my collection is made up of Furls Crochet hooks, and because of their unique shape, it can be tricky to find storage that actually works for them. That’s why I was so excited to try the Thread and Maple Crochet Page for Furls hooks. In this review, I’ll share my honest thoughts, the pros and cons, and whether this crochet hook case is the right fit for your Furls hooks.

Who is Thread & Maple?

Thread & Maple is a Canadian, woman-owned brand that makes luxury leather and wooden goods for knitters and crocheters.  Their lineup includes:

It’s a brand that focuses on making practical tools feel special.

What Exactly is the Thread and Maple Crochet Page for Furls Hooks?

It’s a handcrafted leather “page” made to hold Furls crochet hooks—or any other ergonomic hooks with chunky handles that never seem to fit in standard crochet hook cases. It’s called a page because it can be added into the Thread & Maple Crochet Binder, where it flips just like a page in a book. But you don’t need the binder to use it. On its own, it works as a handy crochet hook case that’s the perfect size for traveling with your favorite Furls hooks, along with a few notions.

What Color Options are There?

There are two different color options to choose from: chocolate and whiskey.  Both are beautiful and it was honestly a really hard choice to make.  Ultimately, I went with the chocolate and I think it’s even prettier in person.

How Many Crochet Hooks Does It Hold?

The Crochet Page for Furls Hooks holds up to 4 of their crochet hooks.  It doesn’t matter which of their hooks you’ve got, it holds them all snuggly and securely.  I tried different hook sizes and types from the Furls Odyssey hooks, alpha series hooks and candy shop hooks to the newer streamline metals.  All of them fit snuggly and securely inside the page. Since Furls hooks have a teardrop shape handle that tapers on either end, it can be so tricky to find cases that hold these hooks securely.   This case did a great job holding them in place and I never once feared they would slip out of place.

Does It Hold Anything Else?

Yes! The Crochet Page for Furls Hooks stores your crochet hooks on the right side and has a roomy pocket on the left for notions like:

  • scissors,
  • stitch markers,
  • a tape measure,
  • a pen (or three).
  • I also tossed in a lip balm or two every time I used it and still had space to spare.

The pocket expands at the top, which makes it easy to see what’s inside and grab what you need without digging around.

Is it Easy To Travel With?

Absolutely! Closed, the Crochet Page measures about 5” wide and 7.25” tall, with a depth of around 2.5” once you’ve added hooks and filled the pocket with notions. Even packed full, it still fit inside almost every project bag I own.

Since it’s made of leather, the case is flexible with a little give around the edges, so even if your bag is jam-packed, you can usually sneak this crochet hook travel case inside.

The closures are another plus. The metal snaps hold the case securely shut, even when I pushed it to capacity. I worried at first they might pop open when I stuffed it into my bag, but they held strong and kept my hooks safe.

Do I Need the Threads & Maple Crochet Binder To Use it?

No, you don’t need the Thread & Maple Binder to use this Crochet Page for Furls Hooks. It’s designed to work as a standalone hook case, so you can fold it closed and pop it in your project bag.

While I don’t own one of their binders, this page apparently fits neatly inside, letting you store all your hooks in one place, and it flips like a page in a standard binder. This is what the little metal rings at the top are for (and yes, it took me FOREVER to figure out!).  If you’d rather not invest in the binder, the crochet page still works effectively on its own.

What I Loved About This Case

  • Style: First off, this case is gorgeous.  The chocolate brown leather is timelessly chic and soft to the touch.  It’s one of the most beautiful crochet hook cases I’ve ever seen and I’ll admit, I felt a little fancy using it.  It’s about a million steps up from my old travel case solution I had been using.
  • Velcro Tab System: The crochet hooks are secured with what Thread & Maple calls a velcro tab. It’s a strip of leather with elastic loops to hold your hooks, backed with strong velcro so you can remove the whole set at once. I thought this was brilliant and found myself using it often. While browsing their site, I noticed they sell extra velcro tabs for some of their other crochet hook pages (like Clover and Susan Bates). I didn’t see any yet for Furls, but I really hope they add them—it would make swapping sets in and out so easy.
  • Expandable Pocket: Another big plus for me was the size of the pocket. It holds more than I expected, including some of my usual “just in case” supplies. The expanding top made it easy to see what was inside and saved me from getting poked by scissors or pins. For a crochet hook travel case, that kind of thoughtful detail makes a big difference.

What Didn’t Work for Me

The case is sturdy and I felt comfortable trusting it with my favorite, gorgeous hooks for longer periods of time.  However, because there’s some natural give around the edges of the case (as you’d expect from leather or fabric), I was really nervous storing my smaller-sized wooden streamline hooks and resin hooks inside.  There was very little protection for the tips of the hooks and I feared that having the head of the hook exposed could result in hook breaks if the top end of the case was pressed against.  For metal hooks, this case is amazing but unless I’m using a degree of caution and not just flippantly tossing the case in my bag (which also gets tossed around), I’ll primarily use it for my metal hooks.

The next point is both a pro and a con depending on your preferences.  The Crochet Page for Furls Hooks is made of genuine leather, and leather naturally develops little marks over time.  When I noticed the first scratch, my heart skipped a beat, but I reminded myself that’s part of what gives leather its unique character.

Over time, the case will soften, telling the story of my travels, and become my on unique work of art (which I love). So if you’re someone that isn’t going to love the look of that added character, leather travel cases may not be the right fit. (Thread & Maple sells a leather care kit which can help buffer out small marks but does require some work on your end so if you’re smitten and willing to put in some elbow grease to protect your investment, that’s an option)

How Much Does It Cost?

The Crochet Page for Furls Hooks is definitely a luxury crochet hook case. At the time of writing, it’s priced in the premium range (around $109 CAD plus tax), which makes sense given that it’s handcrafted leather and built to last. If you’ve invested in a premium crochet hook, this case feels like an equally special way to store and protect them. Prices may change, so you’ll want to check the Thread & Maple site for the most current cost.

Final Verdict: Is the Thread and Maple Crochet Page for Furls Hooks Worth It for Furls Fans?

This is an absolutely beautiful hook case and a solid option for portable storage that fits the entire range of Furls Fiberarts hooks. The leather feels luxurious, the design is thoughtful, and it elevates the experience of using and storing your hooks. While the price places it firmly in the luxury category, it’s a piece that will last and only get better with age.

If you’ve invested in Furls hooks and want to protect them in style and for a long time, this case is worth considering. It would also make a thoughtful Christmas gift for the crocheter in your life who seems to already have everything—because chances are, they don’t have this. Whether you’re treating yourself or looking for a gift that will truly impress, this case delivers both practicality and luxury in one beautiful package.  You can check out the Thread & Maple Crochet Page for Furls Hooks here.
