Easy Free Crochet Cowl Pattern: The Ava Cowl

This free crochet cowl pattern creates a beautiful cowl that uses one skein of yarn. This easy crochet cowl is accessible for a crochet beginner because it uses basic stitches to create a cozy crochet cowl to keep you warm during the winter season. The Ava Cowl will become a winter wardrobe staple and makes a great gift.

The Ava Cowl crochet pattern has been a long time coming. I initially posted a picture of my first Ava Cowl on Instagram in the fall season of 2018. I liked the aesthetic of my puff stitch cowl however, I just wasn’t happy with it. So I tweaked it and tweaked it. Then, to be honest, I would put it down for a while because I would get distracted and move on to another crochet project. But, thanks to the many people that loved it and messaged me asking me for the pattern, I perservered rather than letting this design disappear into my wip pile.

My initial plan for this easy crochet pattern was to use up some of the Bernat Pop that I had in my stash but also to create a pattern that could be done utilizing only one skein of Bernat Pop. Everytime I tweaked something I would end up with too much yarn left over and when I say I want to use one skein, I mean that I want to use as much of that skein as I can and waste as little as possible. If you stick to the gauge, you’ll be able to use the full skein with very little waste – maybe 2 to 3 feet of yarn remaining.

There are so many different colors of Bernat Pop available that you can have fun customizing this project to fit your personal style. I personally love to wear bright colors in the cold weather but have fun with choosing your own color palette.

If you’re not wanting to use Bernat Pop, this pattern can be done in your favourite comparable worsted weight yarn as long as you’re meeting gauge. I’ve made this cowl in Blue Chambray and Ebony and Ivory colourways and both turned out amazing. The Ebony and Ivory cowl was a big hit and is actually what inspired my Polar Puff Messy Bun Hat Pattern

Supplies:

• 1 skein of Bernat Pop or 280 yards of comparable worsted weight yarn.  I’m using Bernat Pop in Blue Chambray
  
  
• 6.5 mm crochet hook (or whatever hook you need to obtain the gauge)
  
  
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  
  
• Scissors

• CH = Chain

Special Stitches Required:

Puff Stitch: Yarn over and insert hook into designated stitch.  Yarn over and pull through stitch.  There will be three loops on your stitch.  Repeat this four more times.  You will have a total of eleven loops on the hook.  Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.  Chain one to secure the stitch. (Check out my Crochet Puff Stitch Tutorial).

Size:

• 17” across when laid flat and 9.75” tall

Gauge:

• 15 sts across x 12 rows = 4” square

The Ava Cowl Free Pattern

CH 110.  Join with a sl st to form a circle.  Make sure your chain isn’t twisted before joining. 

Rows 1 – 3: CH 1. Sc in each stitch across.  Join with sl st.  (110)

Row 4: CH 2. HDC in first stitch.  *CH 1, skip 1 stitch, HDC in next stitch*.  Repeat until end.  Join with sl st. (110)

Rows 5 – 6: CH 1.  Sc in each stitch across.  Join with sl st. (110)

Row 7: CH 3 (counts as a stitch) PS in 2^nd stitch.  Skip 1 stitch. *1 ps, skip 1* til end.  Join with sl st to the top of the CH 3. (110)

Rows 8 – 9: CH 1.  Sc in each stitch across.  Join with sl st.  (110)

Row 10: CH 2. HDC in first stitch.  *CH 1, skip 1 stitch, HDC in next stitch*.  Repeat until end.  Join with sl st. (110)

Rows 11 – 12: CH 1.  Sc in each stitch across.  Join with sl st.  (110)

Row 13: CH 2 (counts as a stitch) Ps in 2^nd stitch.  Skip 1 stitch. *1 ps, skip 1* til end.  Join with sl st to the top of the CH 3 (110)

Rows 14 – 15: CH 1.  Sc in each stitch across.  Join with sl st.  (110)

Row 16: CH 2. HDC in first stitch.  *CH 1, skip 1 stitch, HDC in next stitch*.  Repeat until end.  Join with sl st. (110)

Rows 17 – 18: CH 1.  Sc in each stitch across.  Join with sl st.  (110)

Row 19: CH 2 (counts as a stitch) Ps in 2^nd stitch.  Skip 1 stitch. *1 ps, skip 1* til end.  Join with sl st to the top of the CH 3. (110)
