How Do I Crochet This Simple Cowl?
This beautiful cowl is worked from bottom to top and has a simple six row repeat that once you get the hang of it’ll be smooth sailing.
โWhat Yarn Do I Need?
This easy crochet cowl pattern uses a worsted weight / size for yarn weight yarn called Bernat Pop, which since the time this pattern was released, has since been discontinued. Fear not! There are other great options that you can substitute in for Bernat Pop yarn and we’ll talk about that below.
Yarn Substitutes for Bernat Pop
Bernat Pop was a beautiful yarn that came in self-striping yarn cakes that typically had 4 different colors in it. It was perfect for adding colors to projects like this without needing to weave in ends.
Here I’ve collected some of the best yarn substitutes for Bernat Pop (self-striping and solids) to help you find the best yarn for your project.
Here are some of my favorite self-striping yarn substitutes for Bernat Pop:
- Red Heart Roll With It (tweed or melange)
- Caron Jumbo Ombre
- Caron Cakes
Here are some of my favorite single color yarn substitutes for Bernat Pop:
You’ll need to use multiple different skeins of yarn in different colors if you want to maintain the striping effect but this cowl looks fabulous in a single color as well.
- Red Heart with Love Yarn
- Lion Brand Yarn Heartland
- Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice
- Furls Wander Yarn
- Loops & Threads Impeccable
- Brava Worsted
- Malabrigo Rios
- Muse Aran

Special Stitches:
- Puff Stitch: Yarn over (YO) and insert hook into designated stitch.ย YO and pull up a loop (3 loops on your hook).ย *YO and insert into the same stitch and pull up a loop, repeat from * 3 more times.ย You should have a total of eleven (11) loops on the hook.ย YO and pull through all loops on the hook. Size:
- 17โ across when laid flat and 9.75โ tall
Gauge:
- 13 sts across x 12 rows = 4โ square
NOTES:
- Gauge is not vital to the project but it may affect the amount of yarn needed for the project and the size of your finished cowl.ย
- This project is worked in joined rows where the two ends of the row are joined with a slip stitch. Do not turn at the end of each round unless it is noted to do so.
- Reading the Pattern: Instructions with asterisks (*): I.e.: *PS, SK 1, repeat from * until end.ย This means youโll work 1 puff stitch in the first stitch and then youโll skip a stitch, leaving it unworked.ย Then youโll repeat the pattern again, puff stitch in the first stitch, skip the next stitch, until you reach the end of the round.
- Numbers indicated in () at the end of a Round/Row indicate the number of stitches you should have at the end of the Round/Row. I recommend counting your stitches at the end of each Round/Row before moving on to the next.
- Numbers indicated in () at the end of a Round/Row indicate the number of stitches you should have at the end of the Round/Row. I recommend counting your stitches at the end of each Round/Row before moving on to the next.
- Rows that begin with a CH 3: the CH 3 counts as the first ST and is included in the stitch count. When joining with a slip stitch at the end of these rows, join your slip stitch to the top of the CH 3.
- CH 1 and 2s at the beginning of rows never count as a stitch and are never included in the stitch counts.
- When joining with a slip stitch at the end of a row, placing a stitch marker in the first and/or last stitches of the round can help you keep track of your starting and stopping points so that you donโt pick up or lose any stitches. Take a moment at the end of each row to count your stitches to ensure that you have the correct stitch count before proceeding to the next row.
- CH 1 spaces are included in the stitch count for that row โ each chain = 1 stitch.

Did,you,try,to,send me,an update,for,your cowl pattern
Hi Sharron,
Anyone that purchased a copy of the PDF version of this pattern was sent the updated version of the pattern over the weekend. If you got the PDF via Ravelry, the update was sent through Ravelry. If you got your copy via Etsy then a message was sent via conversations and an email was sent to the email used to purchase the pattern.
Love it! Thank you very much!
You’re welcome ๐
Lovely pattern – look forward to making it for a winter scarf!
Thank you ๐
Hi I have a few questions, when doing the puff stitch does the chain one count as a stitch? I’m a little confused. Does the Chain 1 and 2 for the Half double and Single crochet rows also count as a stitch? thanks so much. ๐
Hi Rebecca,
The CHs at the beginning of each row don’t count as a stitch. The chains worked within each row, after the puff stitches and the HDCs are counted as stitches. I hope this helps. If not, feel free to send me a message on Instagram (www.instagram.com/theloopylamb) or send me an email at ashley@theloopylamb.com. I’m happy to help further if needed ๐
This cowl is absolutely gorge, just got the pattern on the blog hop. Thanks so much for participating.
Just a quick question, is the headband/earwarmer in the photo one of your pattern designs also,? If so, could you share the pattern name, please. Thank you in advance.
Hi Marsha,
The ear warmer is also one of my designs. It’s called The Twisted Shells Ear Warmer ๐
Do you have a picture of the ebony and ivory cowl?? I would love to see it, is that a Bernat Pop yarn color as well??
Thanks!
Hi Carla,
Ebony and Ivory is a Bernat Pop colour that is black, white and shades of gray. It’s lovely. A picture of the ebony and ivory cowl is available on my Instagram feed.
Really pretty! I have to make this!
Thanks Julie! I hope you enjoy it ๐
