I decided to make a crochet top for myself for the summer and after some research I discovered a new-to-me yarn that I decided to use for that top – Kelbourne Woolens Mojave. Today I’ll be sharing my review of Kelbourne Woolens Mojave yarn, including what it’s like to work with, how to care for it and you’ll see it in a crochet swatch so you can see how it looks in a crochet swatch.

I picked up my Kelbourne Woolens Mojave from a local yarn store and got it in the colour Turquoise (my favourite). The colour is beautiful and is going to make a stunning crochet top. The yarn is soft in the hank and when I picked it up, I couldn’t wait to work it up. This yarn comes in hanks so you’ll need to have a yarn winder to cake it up.
I bought my Kelbourne Woolens Mojave yarn to make the Riviera Top by Pamela Stark. I fell in love with this top when Pam first posted it and knowing Pam creates gorgeous, well-written, size-inclusive designs, it was a no-brainer to pick this top for my personal project. Kelbourne Woolens Mojave yarn was lovely to work with but I did have a feel issues with splitting. The splitting wasn’t crazy or overly frequent but I did have it happen with probably 1 to 2 stitches/row. The cotton/linen blend will make it perfect for my Riviera Top that I’m working on and I can’t wait to wear it. I did not experience any hand pain while working with this yarn unlike some other cotton or linen yarns that I have tried in the past. The strand was smoothe and easy to crochet with. I did a swatch in half double crochet stitches with some double crochet stitches at the top and washed the swatch in the machine to see how it would hold up. After washing the swatch, I laid it flat to dry. After washing, the swatch, the swatch experienced very little shrinkage and was a little softer than when it went into the machine. I’m excited to finish up my top and wear it because it will feel fabulous next to skin.
If you’re planning on crocheting a top or other crochet garment with Kelbourne Woolens Mojave and want a closed fabric, I’d recommend starting out with a 3.25 mm crochet hook and shorter stitches like the half double crochet. I tried multiple stitch and hook combinations before settling on this hook and stitch combination which gave me a decent drape and very little peek-through. I don’t want to have to wear a tank top under my Riviera Tee so it was important for me to have a closed fabric. Now this is dependant on your own personal gauge so I suggest it as a starting place for you to find your own personal preference.
