What is a ripple stitch in crochet?

A ripple stitch in crochet refers to a decorative stitch pattern that creates a wavy or rippling effect in the fabric.

This is achieved by alternating increases and decreases to create peaks and valleys. By strategically placing these increases and decreases, crocheters can produce a pretty wave pattern resembling waves or ripples that’s perfect for crochet blankets and more.

The difference between a ripple blanket and a chevron blanket is how the increases and decreases are placed.  The increases and decreases in a ripple blanket tend to happen over multiple stitches while chevrons usually have their increases in a single stitch in order to create a sharper peak.

How many chains do I need for a ripple blanket?

My Tempest Teal ripple pattern uses a stitch multiple of 17+3. This means that you’ll create a starting chain counting in multiples of 17 and then you’ll had 3 more chains at the end.

For example, to make the gauge swatch for this pattern, we create a chain of 54.

17 x 3 = 51

51 + 3 = 54

Knowing the stitch multiple enables you to make a cozy blanket using this wavy pattern in any size you’d like and using any yarn weight you’d like.

So whether you’d prefer to use a bulky yarn, a self-striping yarn with gradient colors or just use up some yarn from your stash, you can do that. Just make sure you use the right hook size for your yarn.

If figuring out stitch multiples has your head spinning – I’ve got you covered. At the end of this post, I’ve included a chart with all of the starting chains you’ll need for all the standard sizes including how many rows you’ll need to do and how much yarn you need.

Keep in mind when using this tool that these numbers are based on the gauge given in the pattern so if you’re not matching gauge then your blanket may be a different size and the amount of yarn you use will be different.

About The Yarn

For the Teal Tempest wave blanket crochet pattern, I used Furls Wander yarn in 4 different colors: Mist, Surf, Penninsula and Tundra.  I love using Furls Wander to create blankets.

Last year I created another easy pattern using simple stitches with this yarn (the Wander Often Blanket free crochet blanket pattern) and it has been the coziest blanket so I knew that I had to make another one.

Furls Wander is a 100% acrylic, worsted weight (4) yarn.  It’s machine washable in cold water but you have to lay it flat to dry. If you’re blocking your blanket, I recommend steam blocking to get the best results.

Color Inspiration

Sometimes picking colors for new patterns can be daunting so here are some Furls Wander color combos to take a look at if you need a little help getting started:

  • Obsidian, Foundry, Moonbeam, Alabaster
  • Festival, Orchid, Laguna, Moonbeam
  • Aurora, Bergamot, Wintermint, and Dragonfruit
  • Meadow, Patina, Conifer, Snow
  • Canary, Orchid, Festival, Foundry

Notes:

  • Gauge is not vital for this project but not matching gauge may affect the size of your finished blanket and the amount of yarn used.

  • CH 3s at the beginning of rows count as the first ST of the row and should be worked into, in the following row. If you struggle with working into a turning chain, place a stitch marker into the 3rd CH of the CH 3 so you know where to work into the following row.

  • Color changes are done using the last yarn over (YO) of the previous stitch.

  • To adjust the size of this blanket, create a foundation chain in multiples of 17+3.

  • In the below chart, I’ve included the number of chains, stitches and rows needed to create 13 other sizes for this blanket. The written pattern below is for the Lapghan size. The row repeat once you get past Row 6 is Row 3, Row 4, Row 5, Row 4.  Repeat those rows for the total number of rows listed in the chart below or until you’ve reached your desired size.

  • If you want to replicate the colour pattern shown in the Lapghan sample, here is the colour repeat: 6 Rows Colour A, 6 Rows Colour B, 6 Rows Colour C, 8 Rows Colour D, 6 Rows Colour C, 6 Rows Colour B, 6 Rows Colour A.

  • Yardage amounts in the chart at the bottom of the page are approximate and based on the gauge given in the pattern.
