I wanted to create a free pattern for a crochet scarf that is accessible to beginners, works up quickly but looks great. So if you need a last minute crochet gift or you just want a great crochet scarf with all over texture to mix up your fall and winter wardobe, this pattern has got you covered. Did I mention that there are no ends to weave in on this scarf? Pretty sweet, right? Let’s get started!

When Furls asked me to design something with their new Wander Yarn (check out my review of this Furls Wander Yarn), I was really drawn to the Velvet and Ambrosia colours so I knew I was going to use them. I can never resist a good shade of grey so I picked out the colours Mist and Cobblestone as well to break up the Velvet and Ambrosia in my design. I tried a variety of combinations of these colours in different swatches and finally decided on a design that would have an all over texture that was really easy to achieve. If you know how to do the Single Crochet, Half Double Crochet and Double Crochet then you’ll be able to crochet this scarf. If you don’t know these stitches, click on the names of the stitches above or in my abbreviations section below to find tutorials on how to do these stitches.
This crochet pattern was designed to meet standard scarf measurements of 60″ long x 8″ wide. In the pictures, I’m modelling the scarf with is wrapped over my shoulder (with slightly more scarf in the back) and I am 5’4″ tall. I designed this crochet scarf pattern to be gender neutral so that it can be a versatile scarf pattern that you can use for anyone. If you’re making this scarf for someone else, pick their favourite colours and get started. If you aren’t sure what they’re favourite colours are, I have included some suggestions for different colour combinations below that could give you some ideas to get started. Feel free to omit the fringe if your recipient isn’t a fringe fan.
This scarf looks great in a variety of different colour combinations or even as a solid colour, if you prefer. Below I have suggested some other colour combinations to help get your creative juices flowing. Next to each colour I have indicated the number of balls I would use:
- Midnight x 2, Obsidian x1, Mist x1, Alabaster x 1 (Blue, Black, Light Grey & White)
- Ambrosia x2, Obsidian x1, Mist x1, Alabaster x1 (Yellow, Black, Light Grey & White)
- Conifer x2, Cobblestone x1, Mist x1, Obsidian x1 (Dark Green, Dark Grey, Light Grey & Black)
- Surf x2, Peninsula x1, Tundra x1, Alabaster x1 (Teal, Light Teal, Aqua, White)

- CH = Chain
- DC = Double Crochet
- FO = Finish Off

Finished Size:
- 60” Long by 8” wide (not including fringe)
Gauge:
- 15 sts x 10 rows = 4 inches in pattern stitch
NOTES:
- CH 2 at the beginning of each row counts as the first ST.
- Leaving a tail of at last 6 inches when you start and finish a new colour will eliminate the need to weave in ends as your tails can be added to the scarf fringe.

Free Pattern for a Crochet Scarf: The Brave At Heart Crochet Scarf
Using Colour A, CH 226.
Row 1: (SC, HDC, DC) in the 4th CH from the hook (skipped sts count as first ST), *SK 2 CH, (SC, HDC, DC) in the next CH; repeat from * across to last CH, HDC in last CH. Turn. (224)
Rows 2 – 5: CH 2, (SC, HDC, DC) in the next DC and each DC across. HDC in the top of the turning CH. Turn.
Change to Colour B
Rows 6 – 7: CH 2, (SC, HDC, DC) in the next DC and each DC across. HDC in the top of the turning CH. Turn.
Change to Colour C
Rows 8 – 9: Repeat Rows 6 – 7.
Change to Colour D
Rows 10 – 11: Repeat Rows 6 – 7.
Change to Colour C
Rows 12 – 13: Repeat Rows 6 – 7.
Change to Colour B
Rows 14 – 15: Repeat Rows 6 – 7.
Change to Colour A
Rows 16 – 19: Repeat Rows 6 – 7, twice.
Row 20: CH 2, (SC, HDC, DC) in the next DC and each DC across. HDC in the top of the turning CH.
FO leaving a tail of at least 6 inches.
Fringe:
Cut 5 – 12” long pieces of yarn to create each tassel. Create 12 tassels in Velvet, 4 tassels in Mist and Cobblestone, 2 tassels in Ambrosia.
*Holding 5 strands of yarn together, fold them in half lengthwise. Insert your crochet hook through the end of the short edge of your scarf in a row that matches the colour of yarn you are using for your tassel and grab the mid-point of your folded yarn bundle.
Pull it through the fabric to the other side until you have a loop large enough to fit the tails of your yarn bundle through the loop. Insert the tails through the loop and pull taught to the fabric. Repeat from * for each tassel, attaching 3 Velvet coloured tassels to each end of the Velvet sections and one coordinating tassel to the ends of each coloured section.
