Making crochet tree ornaments is one of my favourite things to do (and design) during the holiday season. Today I have a quick and fun free crochet pattern to share with you that makes a great last-minute Christmas gift as well as a memorable addition to any Christmas tree: my free Crochet Snowman Ornament pattern.

Every year I make new crochet tree ornaments for my tree and I realized that I didn’t have any snowman decorations on my tree. I set out to remedy that by creating this cute little snowman head. It’s a great addition to the tree and these adorable snowman baubles work up really quickly.
This crochet Christmas bauble pattern is an adorable fluffy crochet snowman head ornament, wearing a scarf and top hat. Look at that little face! It’ll melt anyone’s frozen heart and kids will delight in seeing it on the tree.
How Do you Crochet an Easy Snowman Ornament?
This cute little crochet snowman head is really very simple to crochet. It is made in separate pieces and then those pieces are sewn together:
- We start by using faux fur yarn to crochet our head (check out my tips for working with faux fur yarn here).
- Then we crochet the carrot nose, the scarf and the top hat – all of which are use worsted weight yarn.
- These pieces are then sewn onto our snowman head with a tapestry needle.
- All of the pieces in this free crochet snowman ornament pattern are made using only the single crochet stitch.

Materials Needed to Crochet an Amigurumi Snowman
Before we get started, let’s talk about what materials we need to crochet our snowman ornament. To make this crochet ornament you’ll need white yarn (fur yarn) for the snowman’s head, black yarn for the hat, orange yarn for the carrot nose and red yarn to make the scarf that would go around the snowman’s neck. Feel free to substitute one of your favorite colors for the red, if you’d prefer.
This project was designed using WeCrochet’s Fable Fur yarn, which is, as the name suggests, a faux fur yarn. This can make it a bit tricky to see your stitches but, if you watch my tips and tricks video above for using this yarn, it will help you hit the ground running.
If you want to try to substitute a bulky or super bulky weight yarn that isn’t a faux fur yarn, make sure you take the time to match the gauge given for the pattern with whatever you choose to substitute. If you don’t match the gauge with your substituted yarn, the other pieces will not be proportionate to your piece.

- We Crochet Fable Fur (100% Polyester, 71 yds / 70 m, 100 g / 3.53 oz), 1 Skein in Eisbar (Approx. 22 g/16 yds)
- Brava Worsted (Worsted Weight (4), 100% Premium Acrylic, 218 yds / 200 m, 100 g / 3.5oz)
- Colour A: Red (1 Skein, Approx. 7 g / 18 yds)
- Colour B: Orange (1 Skein, Approx. 2 g / 4 yds)
- Colour C: Black (1 Skein, Approx. 14 g / 30 yds)
- 2 – 18 mm Safety Eyes
- Polyester Stuffing
- 12” piece of 3/8” (9mm) ribbon in preferred colour or piece of yarn
- Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:
- BLO = Back Loops Only
- CH = Chain

Finished Size:
- Approximately 5.5” tall from top of hat to scarf
Gauge:
- Fable Fur: 4 sts x 5.5 rows = 2”
- Rounds 1 – 5 of Hat = 1.5” across at widest point.
Notes:
- Gauge is not vital to project as long as the same tension is maintained throughout the project and stuffing cannot be seen through any holes. Not matching gauge may affect the size of your project and the amount of yarn required.
- If this is your first time working with faux fur yarn, I recommend checking out my tips and tricks for working with faux fur yarn video to help you get started.
- A 5.5mm crochet hook is recommended for the fur yarn components of the project but if you find you are unable to feel your stitches, you can adjust your hook size until you can more easily feel your stitches to know where to place your stitches. This may affect your gauge and the amount of yarn needed.
- This pattern is worked in continuous rounds (unless stated otherwise). Do not join at the end of the row, unless indicated. A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.
- All pieces made in the Fable Fur are worked and sewn onto the project with the wrong side facing out to show the better-looking side of the fur.
- For a cleaner SC decrease when using Brava, do your SCDEC under the FLO of each stitch rather than under both loops. This is often referred to as an invisible decrease. Find my invisible decrease tutorial here.

Head
Round 1: Using Fable Fur and 5.5mm hook, make a MC and SC 6 into the MC. (6)
Round 2: (SCINC) x 6 (12)
Round 3: (SC, SCINC) x 6 (18)
Rounds 4 – 8: SC around (18) – Place safety eyes in Round 4 with 3 sts between them
Start adding stuffing, adding a bit more as you work.
Round 9: (SC, SCDEC) x 6 (12)
Round 10: (SCDEC) x 6 (6)
FO leaving a long tail to sew up the hole. Add a bit more stuffing and sew up the hole. Weave in ends. If the hair around the eyes is covering up the eyes too much, lightly trim the fur around the eyes with scissors.
Scarf Part A:
Using Brava in Colour A and 3.5mm hook CH 30. Join last CH to first CH with a SL ST to form a ring, taking care not to twist the CH.
Round 1: CH 1. SC in first CH and each CH around. Join last ST to first ST with a SL ST (from here on out referred to as “Join”). (30)
Rounds 2 – 3: CH 1, SC in first ST and each ST around. Join. (30)
FO leaving a long tail for sewing.
Scarf Part B:
Using Brava in Colour A and 3.5mm hook CH 10. Turn.
Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from the hook and each CH across (9)
Rows 2 – 3: CH 1 and turn. SC in first ST and each ST across. (9)
FO leaving a long tail for sewing.
Assembling the Scarf:
Use tail on Part B to sew the short side of Part B of the scarf to the top of the last round of Part A. Sew along the parts where Part B and Part A now overlap to secure.
Use tail from Part A to sew Part A to the bottom of the head. Using sewing pins can help to hold the piece in place and help it keep its circular shape while sewing onto the head.
Nose
Round 1: Using Brava in Colour B and 3.5mm hook, make a MC and SC 4 into the MC. (4)
Round 2: (SCINC, SC) x 2 (6)
Round 3: SC around (6)
Round 4: (SCINC, SC 2) x 2 (8)

Creating the Hanger
Thread the ribbon or piece of yarn onto a tapestry needle. Insert tapestry needle through one of the stitches near the top/center point of the hat and out through the stitch directly opposite the stitch you went into. Tie the ends together in an overhand knot and slide the knot inside the hat.
