A Way to Minimize Waste
This free crochet christmas cracker pattern is part of the 2023 Christmas in July Make Along, hosted by Underground Crafter. When I first started brainstorming ideas for a Christmas in July project, I started thinking about different ways that I could use crochet to minimize waste this Christmas and/or create something that could be used year after year by my family.
While cleaning out my storage room one day, I came across a box of Christmas crackers we had left over from last Christmas and then it hit me. I could make my own Christmas Crackers and by doing so, I’d be able to fill them with actually useful little gifts and treats and when we are done with them, we could just store them again until next year.
While I was working away on my first crochet Christmas cracker one of my Aunts mentioned that she thought that it would also make a cool, reusable gift wrap. You could use it to wrap small items like gift cards, jewelry, treats and more. So it can definitely serve more than one purpose.
Yarn Choice
I chose to use a cotton yarn over an acrylic yarn for this design for two reasons: the cotton gives the project more structure and it will also hold up better in the washing machine should someone spill their wine or chocolate milk on one and they need to be washed.
After you’re done crocheting your cracker, be sure to check out the other beautiful projects that are part of the Christmas in July Make Along. Keep reading to learn more about the Make Along and how you can join in the fun and possibly win one of great prizes being offered.

- The cracker is broken down into 3 parts: First End, Body and Second End. It is crocheted in a single piece, from bottom to top. After completing the cracker, we’ll crochet the ties and then assemble it.
- For areas using two colours of yarn, carry unused colours and crochet over them as you work.
- For large areas using only one colour (i.e. Rounds 4 – 13) carry the unused colour up the inside of the piece or cut the second colour and rejoin the next time it is used.
- This entire project is worked in rounds worked in the BLO (except where indicated).
- Colour changes are executed using the last yarn over of the previous stitch (unless where stated otherwise).
- Instructions within the brackets () are to be repeated the number of times specified next to the brackets. I.e. (C1) x 2 means you’ll single crochet in the back loop only with colour 1 in the next 2 stitches.
- A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of the round.

FO with invisible join (See Special Stitches and Techniques).
Ties (Make 2)
Using Color B and leaving a yarn tail at least 2 inches long, CH 70. (Add or subtract chains to adjust the tie to your preferred length).
FO and pull yarn through the last CH. Tie an overhand knot over the space where the yarn tail meets the chain on each end of the tie, getting as close to the chain as possible.
Trim the yarn tails to approx. 1” long. Set aside for assembly.
Assembly:
Hold a cardboard paper towel or toilet paper tube next to your cracker so it lines up with the Body section of the cracker.
If needed, to ensure the tube will fit inside this section, trim your tube so that it fits inside the Body section of the cracker. Insert the tube inside the cracker.
Inserting the ties: Thread the tie onto a tapestry needle or using a crochet hook, weave the tie through the chain spaces created in Rounds 16 and 36 of the First and Second Ends.
Use:
Insert small toys, treats, gifts and other trinkets inside the body of the cracker and tie the ties in a bow to secure each end shut.
