How Do You Crochet a Kid’s Vest?

This crochet vest pattern is worked from the bottom-up. You’ll crochet the body of the vest up to the armholes. The front two panels are crocheted onto the body and then the back panel is added. The only seaming that needs to be done is to sew the shoulder seams together.

If you’re comfortable doing the half double crochet stitch, you can absolutely crochet your child/grandchild a vest using this free crochet vest pattern.

Can I Make This Crochet Vest Free Pattern in A Different Yarn?

Although this children’s crochet vest free pattern is crocheted using Fable Fur yarn, it can be crocheted using a smooth, super bulky yarn. Do a gauge swatch with your preferred yarn and a coordinating hook. If you can match the gauge given for the pattern with your preferred yarn and you like the look of your fabric, you’re good to go.

What Sizes Are Available?

I’ve written the Trendy Kids Fur Vest pattern in the following children’s and toddler sizes:

How Do I Know What Size of Vest to Make for My Child?

To figure out what size of vest you should make, use a tape measure to measure around the bust/chest of your child, just under the armpits. Compare that measurement to the given bust size in the size chart for the pattern.

The pattern is written with 3″ of positive ease, which means that there are 3″ of extra movement added to the garment on top of the given chest measurements. So if your child’s chest measures 21″, they would wear a size 2. If you want the vest to be baggier to fit over a big hoodie or sweater, I recommend going up a size in the size chart.

If your child’s measurement falls between a set of numbers in the given size chart, I recommend making the next size up so they can enjoy their vest for as long as possible.

Working With Faux Fur Yarn

This children’s vest pattern is a greaty project to try crocheting with faux fur yarn. You’re crocheting using a 10mm (N/P) crochet hook which makes it super easy to feel your stitches as you work and you’re working back and forth in rows. I have included my tips and tricks for working with faux fur yarns below. Gauge:

• If this is your first time working with faux fur yarn, I recommend checking out my tips and tricks for working with faux fur yarn before getting started.  Don’t skip this step.  The fur obstructs the view of your stitches so I want you to enjoy making this and not get frustrated.
  
  
• This vest is worked from the bottom up.  The body panel is worked as one piece that will wrap around the body. When the armpits are reached, you will work 3 separate panels up to the shoulder.  You will work the right front panel, then skip sts for the underarm and work the back panel.  Then you’ll skip sts for left underarm and work the left front panel.  Seam shoulders and you’re finished.

Row 1 (RS): CH 41 (45, 48, 50), HDC in the 2^nd CH from the hook, HDC in each CH across.  CH 1 and turn. (40, 44, 47, 49 sts)

Rows 2 – 12 (14, 14, 16): HDC in the 1^st ST and each ST across. CH 1 and turn.

Right Front:

Row 1: HDCDEC, HDC 4 (5, 6, 7). (5, 6, 7, 8 sts)
