This week I have the opportunity to review a yarn from a local indie dyer Rhichard Devrieze Yarns. I met Rhichard at a local yarn event and was fortunate enough to be provided with some of his Sirocco yarn to review and design with.

More About Rhichard Devrieze Yarns
Rhichard Devrieze Yarns based out of Ontario and currently carries yarn on 4 different bases: Fynn (worsted weight), Peppino (fingering weight), Sirocco (DK) and Thede (fingering weight). You can find his work on his site: rhichard.com. There is an impressive amount of colourways available and it was truly difficult for me to make a selection. Every time I thought I was close to picking a colour or two, I’d find another one that I liked.

I ended up with the colourways Oz Opal and Indigo Bunting. I love blues and the Indigo Bunting is a bright, solid blue colour so I was drawn to it immediately. When I saw it was named after a bird I like, the decision was made for me. Rhichard has a lot of really gorgeous stippled yarns and I knew I was going to have to use one of those in a design. The Oz Opal colour way drew my eye and it has some of same blue as the Indigo Bunting in it so I thought they’d pair nicely. The Oz Opal has shades of pink, yellow, purple, blue and green and everything about this colourway appealed to me. I’m one of those weirdos people that lets the yarn “speak” to them and Oz told me to bring it home so I did.
Sirocco Yarn Label Info
Each 110g hank of Sirocco yarn contains 267 yards/244 meters of DK weight yarn. The yarn is made of 100% superwash merino wool. The label indicates that a 5 – 7 US/3.5mm – 4.5mm knitting needle would be appropriate for this yarn. I’ll probably be using a crochet hook from this range up to possibly a 5mm hook with this yarn for my project.
Swatching, Working with the Yarn & Thoughts
I did the above pictured swatch with a 4.0mm Furls crochet hook and it turned out beautifully. I used the Opal Oz colourway and the I really like the way the colours worked up, particularly in the double crochet section. I will likely go up a hook size or two from the 4.0mm I used for the swatch as I’d like to have a bit more fluidity in my fabric for what I have in mind. The yarn strand was tightly plied so I didn’t experience any splitting at all and the stitch definition is absolutely beautiful. Overall the yarn was an absolute pleasure to work with and I won’t hesitate to check out any of Rhichard’s other yarns in future.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with these yarns and I can’t wait to start my design! I have so many ideas for them that it’s going to be hard to decide I think.
