This week I’m sharing a super fun project to make: My Quick & Easy Crochet Beard Pattern. Fur yarn helps to give this crochet beard pattern a realistic look without having the hassle of attaching individual yarn strands and brushing them out. This pattern is available in three different sizes so that you can make a crochet beard for the whole family. In this post, you’ll find the written pattern for each beard size as well as a step-by-step video tutorial.

These beards make great last-minute Halloween costumes or great gifts to give to small children. After I made my first beard, I sent a photo to my family and my entire family asked for me to make them their own beard so don’t feel like you’re limited to gifting this to kids. After all, you’re never too old to have a little fun wearing a fake beard.
If you’re like me and hate having a cold face from the winter winds, then you may want to make your own crochet facial hair to keep your face warm. Because these beards use ear loops, you won’t need to attach them to a crochet hat for them to be worn. These beards are adjustable as you can make the ear loops any length you’d like in order to get the best individual fit possible.
You only need to know how to chain and do the single crochet stitch in order to make your own beard and you can get several beards from a single skein of fur yarn. For this project, I used WeCrochet’s Fable Fur yarn. I used white fur because I wanted a crochet santa beard but I’ve also made this project in different colors like brown, black and grey. Do I have to Use Fur Yarn to Make My Crochet Beard?
Not necessarily. If you prefer to use a smooth yarn to make your beard, you can do that as long as you match the gauge given in the pattern. However, I highly recommend using a fur yarn in order to get the most realistic-looking crochet beard possible.
How Do I Know What Size to Make My Beard?
I’ve tried my best to create sizes that would fit most people’s faces however, every person is different. These sizes were determined using measurements from ear to ear, measured across the face, and under the nose. If you’re unsure what size to make, use a tape measure and measure from the front of one ear to the other and pick the pattern size closest to that measurement.

- I / 5.5 mm Crochet Hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)
- We Crochet Fable Fur (100% Polyester, 71 yds / 70 m, 100 g / 3.53 oz), 1 Skein in Eisbar (Approx 12 – 25 yds)
- Brava Worsted (Worsted Weight (4), 100% Premium Acrylic, 218 yds / 200 m, 100 g / 3.5oz), 1 Skein in White (approx. 2 – 3 yds)
- Tapestry Needle / Yarn Needle
- Scissors
- Stitch Markers
- Wire Brush (optional)
Abbreviations:
- CH = Chain
- FO = Finish Off
- RS = Right Side
- SC = Single Crochet
- SK = Skip
- SL ST = Slip Stitch
- SP = Space
- ST(s) = Stitch(es)
- WS = Wrong Side
Sizes:
- Small Child: 8.75” wide x 2.25” tall
- Child: 9.75” wide x 2.75” tall
- Adult: 11” wide x 3” tall
Gauge:
- 11 sts x 9 rows = 4”
Notes:
- Gauge is vital to ensuring that the beard will fit the desired recipient properly.
- A 5.5mm (I) crochet hook is recommended for the project. If you cannot easily feel your stitches, adjust your hook size until you can. This will help you know where to place your stitches. However, this may affect your gauge and therefore, the amount of yarn needed. Check out my Tips & Tricks for Crocheting with Fur Yarn post before getting started.
- This pattern is worked back and forth in turned rows from the top of the beard to the bottom. Placing a stitch marker in the first and last stitch of each row can help you keep track of those stitches.
- This piece is double-sided but if you find that one side of your project is furrier than the other, use the furriest side as your right side.
- These sizes were determined using measurements from ear to ear, measured across the face, and under the nose. If you’re unsure what size to make, use a tape measure and measure from the front of one ear to the other and pick the size closest to that measurement.

Small Child Size
Using Fur Yarn, CH 25.
Row 1 (RS): SC in the 2nd chain from the hook and each CH across. (24)
Row 2 (WS): CH 1 and turn. SC in the first 7 STs, CH 10, SK 10, SC in the last 7 STs. (14 STs & 1 CH-10 SP)
Row 3: CH 1 and turn. SC in each ST and CH across. (24)
Rows 4 – 5: CH 1 and turn. SC in each ST across.
FO and weave in ends.
Ear Straps:
Attach worsted weight yarn to one of the bottom corners. CH 13 (adjust this number if you’d like looser or tighter straps). SL ST into the top corner on the same side of the mask. FO and weave in end. Repeat on the other side.

Ear Straps:
Attach worsted weight yarn to one of the bottom corners. CH 12 (adjust this number if you’d like looser or tighter straps). SL ST into the top corner on the same side of the mask. FO and weave in end. Repeat on the other side.
Adult Size
Using Fur Yarn, CH 31.
Row 1 (RS): SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and each CH across. (30)
Row 2 (WS): CH 1 and turn. SC in the first 11 STs, CH 8, SK 8, SC in the last 11 STs. (22 STs & 1 CH-8 SP)
Row 3: CH 1 and turn. SC in each ST and CH across. (30)
Rows 4 – 7: CH 1 and turn. SC in each ST across.
FO and weave in ends.
Ear Straps:
Attach worsted weight yarn to one of the bottom corners. CH 10 (adjust this number if you’d like looser or tighter straps). SL ST into the top corner on the same side of the mask. FO and weave in end. Repeat on the other side.
Finishing Touches (For All Sizes)
If you’d like to make the opening for the mouth a little more noticeable, you can use scissors to lightly trim the fur that overhangs into the ch space / gap of the mouth opening.
If you have visible lines from your rows, you can use a wire brush to gently brush the fur to minimize the visibility of those lines and to fluff up the fur.
