Crocheting With Caron Spice Cakes
I couldn’t wait to dig into the Caron Spice Cakes that I bought. I picked cakes in two different colours: Brave Wave and Indigo Go. The Brave Wave was a no-brainer because of all of the different shades of blues and teals in it but I was really drawn to the Indigo Go because of the mix of bright colours with the purple. In the cake, it really is a beautiful yarn but I really wanted to see what the yarn’s colour change sequence would be as the label indicates a “unique gradient effect”.
It took me a while to find a hook size that got me a crochet fabric that I liked and ended up settling on a 10 mm crochet hook. In the images below, you can see my crochet swatches made with Caron Spice Cakes. I used a 10mm Furls Crochet hook and started with a textured rib stitch and followed that up with some single crochets, half double crochet and double crochet stitches.
Crocheting with Caron Spice Cakes was enjoyable and stress-free. I didn’t experience any splitting, knots or any other sort of annoying dysfunction of the yarn. I crocheted through the majority of one of the yarn cakes I bought in a single evening and I loved it so much, that I designed a crochet pattern with it that evening.
The yarn strand is comprised of plies of two different colours that are twisted together. This creates a marled effect but instead of two solid colours for the entirety of the yarn cake, each strand changes as you work through the cake of yarn which then creates the gradient effect. The gradient effect is very subtle (at least in the Brave Wave that I tested) but would be more noticeable in a larger project. The length of each colour change was shorter than I expected and before I knew it, I’d begin a different section of the colour sequence.
In the above swatch image, you can see the colour changes happening every few rows. I’ve included the below image to give you a close-up look at the stitches and the colour change.
Value for Money
Caron Spice Cakes are a great multipurpose yarn that can be used for a variety of different projects. It’s a soft yarn that can be used for anything from accessories to home décor projects. The price tag of this new caron cakes yarn is $14.99 CAD (at the time of writing this) which is slightly cheaper than other super bulky weight yarns currently available at Michaels like Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and quick. However, Wool-Ease does have 20% wool fiber, where the Spice Cakes are 100% acrylic. So if you have a wool allergy or having wool in your yarn doesn’t matter, then the Spice Cakes are the (slightly) cheaper option.
