Tunisian Crochet is worked differently than regular crochet stitches because for each row of Tunisian Crochet, there is a Forward Pass and a Return Pass needed to complete each of the stitches in your row. Forward Passes are worked from right to left and Return Passes are worked from left to right. Also, when working Tunisian Crochet Stitches, during your Forward Pass, you’ll be keeping all the loops for that stitch on your hook and then working them off the hook when you do your return pass.
The Tunisian Simple Stitch, when written in crochet patterns will be abbreviated as TSS. For today’s tutorial, I’m using a 6.0mm Clover Takumi Tunisian Crochet Hook and a worsted weight yarn of your preference. I’m using WeCrochet Brava Worsted Weight yarn.

- ST = Stitch
- YO = Yarn Over
- TSS = Tunisian Simple Stitch
- CH = Chain
Creating your Starting CH: Create a slip knot and place it on your hook and CH your desired number of stitches. For my example, I did 10 chains because I would like to have 10 stitches. This differs from normal crochet where the CH on your hook doesn’t normally figure into your stitch count.
Row 1 – Forward Pass: Working into the back bump of your CH, insert your hook into the back bump of the second CH from the hook. YO and pull up a loop. *Insert your hook into the back bump of the next chain, YO and pull up a loop.* Repeat instructions in ** until the end of your CH.
Row 1 – Return Pass: YO and pull through first loop only (this is a CH 1). *YO and pull through two loops* Repeat ** until the end of your row. One loop should be left on your hook.
Row 2 – Forward Pass: Insert hook from right to left, under the 2nd vertical bar from your hook. YO and pull up a loop. *Insert hook under the next vertical bar, YO and pull up a loop.* Repeat instructions in ** until the end of your row.
Row 2 – Return Pass: YO and pull through first loop only (this is a CH 1). *YO and pull through two loops* Repeat the instructions in ** until the end of your row and only one loop remains on your hook.
Working consecutive rows of Tunisian Simple Stitch: To work consecutive rows of Tunisian Simple stitch, repeat the instructions for Row 2 (both the forward and return passes) until your work reaches your desired size. When you’re ready to bind off your piece, follow the instructions for binding off below.
Insert your hook from right to left, under the 2nd vertical bar from your hook. YO and pull up a loop. Pull that loop through the loop on your hook. *Insert your hook under the next bar, YO, pull up a loop and pull that loop through the loop on your hook.* Repeat the instructions in ** until the end of your piece. Fasten off and weave in ends.
