Cozy Super Chunky Scarf Free Pattern – Heather Super Scarf

Looking for a beginner-friendly crochet scarf pattern that works up quickly? Then my latest design, the Heather Super Scarf is for you!  This free super chunky scarf crochet pattern is made with super bulky yarn, a big hook size and basic crochet stitches – so you will be wearing it in no time.  This warm and cozy scarf will keep you warm all winter season.

The Heather Super Scarf is an excellent crochet scarf pattern for beginners or for crocheting while you’re binge-watching your favourite T.V. shows.   This simple pattern uses only slip stitches and double crochet stitches to make this beautiful texture.  

This simple stitch pattern has a simple two-row repeat that doesn’t require any counting.  The super bulky yarn helps define the texture, makes amazing chunky tassels and keeps you super warm.

What size crochet hook for a super chunky scarf?

This free crochet scarf pattern uses a 10mm or N-P-15 crochet hook, which helps make this such a quick project. When making yarn substitutions, your fabric should be closed and free of large holes.  So you may need to change your hook size if your fabric isn’t looking like the sample image.

How big is this scarf?

The crochet scarves made with this free scarf pattern are 10” Wide by 84” Long when crocheted to gauge. This scarf is the perfect pattern for beginners since it’s worked width-wise so gauge isn’t vital. You can just work the row repeat until you get to the size that you would like your scarf to be.

How much super chunky yarn is needed for this scarf?

I used 4 skeins of Lion Brand’s Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, approximately 424 yards of yarn.  If you don’t match gauge or adjust the length of your scarf, it will affect how much yarn you use.

While I chose to use a solid color, this scarf looks great in different colors so if you want to use more than one of your favorite colors, go for it.

How do I make this an infinity scarf?

To make this an infinity scarf, crochet the number of rows needed for the scarf to wrap around your neck twice.  Then take each end of the scarf and use a long yarn tail to sew the two ends together.

Finished Size:

• 10” Wide by 84” Long (not including tassels)

Gauge:

• 7 sts x 8 rows = 4 inches

NOTES:

• Gauge is vital to ensuring the project turns out to be the expected size.  You can make this project without matching gauge however, not matching gauge will affect the size of your finished scarf and the amount of yarn used.  Gauge is measured over the pattern stitch worked in turned rows. If you’re not matching the gauge, repeat the instructions given until you reach your desired length.
  
  
• This pattern is worked in turned rows.
  
  
• To adjust the size of this pattern, chain an odd number of chains for your foundation chain.
  
  
• The skipped 3 CHs in Row 1 count as a stitch.
  
  
• The CH 3 at the beginning of odd-numbered rows counts as the first DC ST.
  
  
• The CH 1 at the beginning of each even-numbered row counts as a SL ST.
  
  
• I recommend placing a stitch marker in the first and last ST of the row to keep track of those stitches, moving them up with each subsequent row.

Crochet Scarf Pattern:

CH 21.

Row 1: DC in the 4th CH from the hook (skipped chains count as the first stitch)and each CH across. (18)

Row 2: CH 1 (counts as a SL ST) and turn, SK 1st ST, DC in the 2nd, *SL ST in the next ST, DC in the next ST, repeat from * until the end of the row. (18)

Row 3: CH 3 and turn (CH 3 counts as first ST). SK 1^st ST, DC in 2^nd ST and each stitch across.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until the scarf measures 84” long (or until you reach your desired length).

FO and weave in loose ends.

Tassels: (make 4)

Wrap the yarn around a piece of cardboard 6” wide (or a tassel maker) approximately 20 times.  Tie the top of the tassel with another piece of yarn to secure it (ensuring that it is long enough to attach it to the scarf.  I used an 8” piece).

Cut one side of the yarn that’s wrapped around the cardboard and remove the yarn from the cardboard.  Take another length of yarn and wrap it around the top of the tassel 8 to 10 times tightly.  Tie a knot and bury the end inside the tassel.  

Trim the tassel ends evenly.  Attach a tassel to each corner of the scarf securely.
