When we need to relax and unwind, it’s hard to beat a one-stitch repeat crochet pattern that can be done while we binge our latest favourite shows. When I sat down to design my latest free crochet pattern, I wanted to create a crochet throw blanket that would be a festive, christmas throw but one that could also be used all year long. I used a deep red and white combo that is both seasonally appropriate but is perfectly acceptable to keep out once you put all the holiday decor away.

This modern crochet throw uses a a super bulky (6) weight yarn called Baby Snuggle Solids from Hobbii Yarns. This is a velvet-style yarn that is surprisingly light but still warm and cozy. This throw blanket works up quickly and is a delight to make and use. To be honest, I had planned to gift this blanket but I loved it so much I kept it. I know, I know, that’s terrible but I’m making another one to gift. I promise I’ll give that one away.

The Perfect Crochet Blanket for Beginners

I designed this simple crochet throw blanket pattern to be perfect for beginners. Using basic crochet stitches like Double Crochet and Front and Back Post Crochet stitches, this blanket works up quickly. I designed and crocheted this blanket in only 3 days.

Even if you aren’t a beginner crocheter, I think crocheters of all levels will enjoy making this soft and snuggly velvet crochet blanket.

What type of yarn should I use for my crochet throw blanket?

For this pattern, I used Baby Snuggle Solids from Hobbii Yarns. It’s a size 6 Super Bulky weight yarn. The yarn is incredibly soft and crochets up quickly. Because it is a velvet-style yarn, I recommend leaving tails longer than you normally would to account for any potential fraying.

The Baby Snuggle Solids line comes in 37 different colors, so there are lots of great colour combinations to choose from. Shop Baby Snuggles yarn on the Hobbii Yarns website.

If you decide to use a different yarn for your crochet throw blanket, make sure to take the time to check your gauge. If you’re not particularly concerned with the size of your finished crochet blanket, then you can skip this step but it may result in you using more yarn than I have indicated.

Row 1:  DC in the 4^th CH (skipped 3 CHs count as first ST) from the hook and each ST across (102)

Row 2:  CH 2 and turn.  *FPDC around the first St, BPDC around the next ST, repeat
from * across, DC in the top of the CH 3 from Row 1.

Row 3:  CH 2 and turn.  CrDC across to last ST, DC in top of turning CH.
