Today I’m sharing my free crochet throw pillow pattern for my Ahead of the Curve cabled throw pillow. This pattern creates a modern farmhouse style crochet throw pillow that doesn’t have any holes for your pillow form or stuffing to peek through.

What Yarn Should I Use for a Crochet Throw Pillow?
This is a chunky crochet throw pillow pattern uses a size 5 (bulky) weight yarn called Simply Wool Bulky from WeCrochet. This is a natural yarn that gives great definition to the cables and is an absolute pleasure to use.
If you would prefer to utilize an alternate yarn, choose a smoothe yarn with which you can match the pattern gauge given. If you don’t care about the size of your throw pillow, you can use any smoothe yarn you’d like and use polyfill stuffing to stuff your pillow rather than using a pillow form like I did.
I also recommend using a solid coloured yarn over a variegated yarn since the cables can get lost when there is a ton of colour happening.
Can I Use a Fuzzy Yarn To Crochet a Cable Stitch Pillow?
You could, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Why? Because any sort of fuzz or halo on your yarn could make the cables harder to see. If you want to use a fuzzier yarn, do a gauge swatch to see if you like the look before proceeding.
How to Crochet a Cable Stitch Pillow
This crochet throw pillow is made in two cable stitch panels and then sewn together. I designed this pillow so that all cable stitch rows are done on the right side of the fabric (the one facing you) so you only have to worry about doing front post double crochet stitches. This makes doing cables much easier since you aren’t having to switch between front post and back post double crochets which can be confusing.
Every other row is done in single crochet stitch so get a break from doing the cabling every other row. This is my absolute favourite way to do cable stitches now and I hope you will love it as much as I do.

Gauge:
- Approx 15 sts x 18 rows = 4” in pattern stitch
Notes:
- Gauge is not vital to the project but it may affect the amount of yarn needed and the size of the pillow insert needed.
- CH 1 at the beginning of rows does not count as a stitch.
- Skip stitches behind post stitches.
- All front post stitches are worked around the post of the indicated stitch two rows below.
- Stitch chart shows only the cable repeat and right-side rows (since wrong side rows are just single crochet)
Special Stitches:
- FPDC-L = Front Post Double Crochet Left Leaning – FPDC around the previous SC, 2 rows below.
- FPDC-R = Front Post Double Crochet Right Leaning – Skip the first St and FPDC around the next ST, 2 rows below.
- FPDC-B = Front Post DC Bobble – *YO, insert hook around post of SC 2 rows below as with FPDC, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * 2 times (4 loops on hook), YO and pull through all loops on hook.
- FPDC-V = Front Post Double Crochet V-Stitch – (worked over 3 STs, counts as 3 sts) FPDC around next ST, 2 rows below, SC in the next ST, FPDC around previous ST, 2 rows below (the same stitch as the first post of the V).
- FPDC-DEC = Front Post DC Decrease – (worked over 3 STs, two rows below, counts as 1 st on current row) YO, insert hook around post of previous ST 2 rows below as with FPDC, YO, draw up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, skip next ST, insert hook around post of the next ST 2 rows below, YO, draw up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, pull through all three loops.

CH 62.
Row 1 (RS): SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each CH across. (61)
Row 2 (WS): CH 1 and turn. SC in each ST across.
Row 3: CH 1 and turn. SC in first 8 STs, *FPDC-L, SC, FPDC-R, SC 3, FPDC-V, SC 3, repeat from * 3 times, SC in last 5 STs.
Row 4: CH 1 and turn. SC in the first ST and each ST across.
Row 5: CH 1 and turn. SC in the first 9 STs, *FPDC-DEC, SC 3, FPDC-R, SC 3, FPDC-L, SC 3, repeat from * 3 times, SC in last 4 STs.
Row 6: Repeat Row 4.

Assembling the Pillowcase
Place panels on top of each other with WS together. Use a length of yarn and a tapestry needle to sew the panels together using mattress stitch, leaving one side open.
Insert your pillow into your pillowcase and continue sewing the pillowcase closed. FO and weave in ends.
